What "data center tier" actually means
The term gets used loosely in hosting marketing — "Tier 1 facility" is often shorthand for "good," when the Uptime Institute's actual classification system runs the opposite direction: Tier I is the baseline, Tier IV is the most redundant. We'd rather explain the real scale than lean on the confusion.
- Tier I — a single path for power and cooling, no redundant components. Susceptible to planned and unplanned outages.
- Tier II — adds redundant capacity components (extra chillers, UPS modules, generators) but still a single distribution path.
- Tier III — multiple independent distribution paths, N+1 redundant components, and the ability to perform maintenance without taking systems offline. This is Xervera's baseline across every facility.
- Tier IV — fully fault-tolerant, with 2N or 2N+1 redundancy and physical isolation between redundant systems. The highest tier, and priced accordingly.
In practice, Tier III is where most enterprise SLAs, compliance frameworks, and serious production workloads land — it's redundant enough to survive a component failure or scheduled maintenance without an outage, without the cost premium of full 2N fault tolerance.
